Have been playing around with the multitasking function of the phone and tried many apps. Apparently most apps dont continue to run in the background after you switch app.
For example I was running IMplus messenger and switched to safari, then switched back to IMplus messenger, the messenger will need to RELOAD again and RECONNECT to the net.
This aint truly multitasking as the app doesnt run in the BACKGROUND which i originally thought ....

You have to wait for the app to be updated to be able to multitask.

Apple's iOS multitasking is not like on computers where by any applications can run at the same time. For the iPhone due to the limited RAM, battery and speed, apple created some functions for developer to call in order for those functions to run in the background. So applications have to be rewritten to take advantage of these background functions.  The good thing is apple recognize that the traditional way of doing multitasking does not work well on limited resources devices and was the cause of many problems on devices like Windows phone.

Yes, and I'm glad for how they've implemented multitasking ... it's important to have good battery life, a key factor for mobility as the iPad has shown us.
Btw, my IM has crashed at least once since upgrading. Hope they release a iOS 4 stable version soon.

I use the Sygic GPS software and pre-iOS4 I was able to resume the route when interrupted by a phone call.  Now, after receiving a phone call, the map restarts without the destination and I have to re-key the destination again. The so-called multi-tasking somehow disregarded the current GPS programming. Grrrrrrrrrrr.............

It is strange that many people associate the iphone "multi-tasking" as the same as the "multi-tasking" in general computer term.
My view is that there is no point to have a true-blue multi-tasking in a phone environment.
Most of the scenario when using a phone does not require or are not suitable for multi-tasking. For example, when playing a game, a call come in, user answer the call and go back to the game. If it is true multi tasking, the game will progress during the call and might be game over.
As other users have pointed out, if every app is true multi tasking, the phone will definately slow to un-usable after a few apps and the most import function of a phone (receiving and making call) will be affected.

As of current implementation of iOS4 multi tasking, app has to be re-coded with the "multi-tasking" API to support the multi-tasking else the app will be re-intiated during switching.

I don't about other, but i am quite agreeable to the way "multi-tasking" is implemented in the phone environment where stream (music), notification services, location service are allow to run in the back ground........
